Artist’s taking the Lead

Artist’s taking the Lead is a London 2012 Cultural Olympiad project led by Arts Council England. It involves 12 public art commissions across the country, one in each region, after a selection process made by an independent panel of artists and producers. I was co-commissioned to produce a marketing strategy for the Northeast and Northwest projects. As the vision behind Artist’s taking the Lead is truly artist-led, the work involved close consultation with the commissioned artists as well as numerous partners and stakeholders. For example, in the Northeast, I worked with Ed Carter on flow, a floating, self-powered structure based on a traditional "Shipmill" which will be sited on the River Tyne at Newcastle Gateshead’s quayside. The piece will harness the power of the river, creating energy to power a number of electro-acoustic musical instruments that combine mechanical automation and digital technology, producing sounds that respond directly to the river itself.
