Creation of an Activity Plan for a successful Stage 2 Heritage Lottery Fund application.
I worked with two fellow freelance associates on the successful Stage 2 Activity Plan for the Silverstone Heritage Experience. Following the announcement of a £9.1 million Heritage Lottery Fund grant, the £20 million project will importantly preserve and bring Silverstone’s history to life. The Experience will include:
- A permanent exhibition that will take visitors on an exciting two hour journey through motor racing past, present and future. The exhibition will be housed in the only remaining WWII hanger on the site, which is to the left of the main entrance. The hangar will be fully refurbished and re-clad to create a fantastic, authentic backdrop.
- The latest technology will be used to tell the amazing stories of the people that have been part of the site’s history, from medieval monks and WW2 air crew to the racing drivers, riders, engineers and marshals of today.
- A Collections and Research Centre, offering museum and archive accredited storage for the unique British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC) archive and other motor sport collections as well as a specialist library and learning space for school groups.
- A series of themed tours stopping off at iconic sites around the circuit.
Much of Silverstone’s unique history and collection is literally embedded into the site which has an expanse of some 760 acres. The diverse heritage of the site spans over 5000 years and relates to the Bronze Age, Medieval Age, 18th century, Second World War and British technical and racing heritage.
So the project seeks to tell whole Silverstone story – one that can only be experienced by visiting the site itself and interacting with the multi-layered stories that are woven into the fabric of the modern racing circuit.
Through the creation of a heritage hub as a site of focus and understanding, a heritage trail, accessible archive and range of activities, Silverstone’s history will reach a far wider audience than before and cement its importance for future generations.
